How Does Moisture Affect 3D Printing

For my second (or fist video not sure yet). How much does moisture actually effect 3d printed models and what artifacts will we see?

  • For the experiment we will be looking at a range of PLA filament moisture content
  • Each filament sample will be enough for about 2 benchys
  • 1st sample forced dried pla in oven at 150F for 4 hours. This filament is octave
  • 2nd sample is filament that has been open to a house environment for its lifetime after being unsealed from the manufacture. This filament is Octave
  • 3rd sample is filament that has been put into a pitcher of water. This filament will be assumed to be the maximum amount of moisture that pla can hold. (worst case). this filament is octave
  • all samples will be used to print the 3d benchy (same gcode file) to compare the 3d printing artifacts and quality

Things Needed:

  • 3d printer
  • pitcher of water
  • about 100 feet of PLA filament
  • oven capable of 175F or 80C


  1. Print 2 3D benchies per sample of filamnet
  2. Compare side by side the different filaments

Filament has already been added to the water pitcher and i will leave it in for 1 week (ready to print monday the 22nd) . my experiment will be performed then. and video/write up posted shortly after.

I have got some preliminary findings.

My findings were that moisture effects 3d printing: Kinda/Not Really


  • filament was removed from water pitcher after 1 week. Filament was found to be very brittle and a lot of it snapped off after removing. however once the water on the surface flashed off it was ok to handle and even feed through my bowden Kossel.
  • filament was put into a toaster oven (surprisingly efficient toaster oven) and baked for about 2-3 hours at 150F. the filament that was added was room environment filament that turned out to be 2.3%+ by weight moisture. (which is pretty high i try to extrude filament at .08%).
  • all filaments were extruded at about 50mm/s at 217C the part was the 3d benchy at all original scale with 15% infill and no supports.


  • From my 3 3d prints comparing side by side you can see that there is a big difference between the water logged and the "baked" filament.
  • however i had another print (4th print) that was the same file that i just changed some settings such as increasing the print temp i got the same quality as the "baked" filament".

so my preliminary findings that as long as you don't store your filament submerged in water you should be able to print fine and baking filament to remove moisture is not worth the power.
